How does hypertension vary through demographics?

We split hypertension-based disorders up based on different classifications that let us more accurately predict and diagnose them.

What is it?

Understanding hyper tension is the first part to effective treatment and prevention.

  • Very common for ages 60 and older
  • Can be self-diagnosed from symptoms but should be examined by a doctor
  • Treatable by a medical professional

Hyper tension is high pressure in the arteries (vessels that carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body). The symptoms varies from person to person and generally include unexplained fatigue and headache. High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease. Roughly 50 million American have it. It’s caused when your heart muscle must work extra hard to pump blood through your body because your arteries have narrowed. The artery walls press in with greater force. This is measured by taking your blood pressure. If your reading is 140 / 90 or higher, see your doctor. High blood pressure increases your risk of heart attack and stroke. Risk factors include: Age 55+, Black or African, male, fatty diet/obese, sedentary, a smoker, drinker or recreational drug user. Treatment is normally a combination of diet, medication and exercise.
