Understanding where brain cancer is most common can give us a better insight into research.

What is it?

Understanding brain cancer is the first part to effective treatment and prevention.

  • More common in older adults
  • Should be examined by a doctor
  • Treatable by a medical professional

Brain cancer is a brain injury caused by a mass of abnormal cells in the brain. The exact cause of brain cancer is unknown. However, factors that can increase your risk of brain cancer include exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation and a family history of brain cancer. Cancer in another part of your body is also a risk factor for developing a tumor in the brain, though these aren’t called brain cancer. This is because they can spread to the brain. The symptoms that develop are determined by the type and severity of the brain cancer. Symptoms usually consis of frequent and severe headaches, nausea, vision problems, gradual loss of sensation, hearing problems, and seizures. There's no specific cure for brain cancers, but there are available treatment options. The most common treatment is getting a Surgical Excision, Radiation Therapy which includes whole brain radiation therapy and stereotactic radiosurgery, and Chemotherapy which include standard chemotherapy and targeted therapy.

You Can Prevent Brain Cancer

There are many ways to reduce the chances of sustaining brain cancer. See prevention tips listed below.

Astrocytoma (brain cancer) should be diagnosed by a doctor after a self-check:

  • Persistent headaches
  • Vision changes
  • Coordination problems, such as an inability to stand up straight or difficulty using one of your hands
  • Unexplained vomiting
  • Weakness, numbness, tingling of the arms or legs
  • Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
  • Seizures

Note: While persistent headaches can be a sign of a brain tumor, they rarely owe to one without the other symptoms.
